Health and Fitness ICU Founder Honored

On December 10, 2004, councilwoman JoAnn Watson presented Versandra Kennebrew, founder of Health and Fitness ICU with the Spirit of Detroit award for her leadership and dedication to the improved quality of life of the residents of Detroit.

A massage therapist for more than five years, Versandra noticed that about 90% of the more than two thousand clients she serviced had not received a therapeutic massage prior to their visit with her. This startling statistic prompted her to research uses of other forms of complementary and alternative medicine. Her findings were that 5% of adults in the US have received a therapeutic massage in the past twelve months and 36% of adults had used some form of complementary or alternative medicine in the past twelve months. Statistics for minorities were substantially lower.

Health and Fitness ICU was formed to serve the community by giving them the tools necessary to make educated decisions about their optimal health maintenance. This association of CAM professionals includes holistic bodyworkers, colon hydro therapists, naturopathic doctors, Chinese medicine doctors, nutrition consultants and other volunteer CAM advocates. Volunteer CAM professionals visit area schools, churches and businesses providing workshops and demonstrations. Health and Fitness ICU has educated thousands in 2004 in some way and are looking forward to a productive 2005.

Versandra says, "the Spirit of Detroit Award is an appreciated accolade but Health and Fitness ICU members and volunteers deserve much praise for their dedication and commitment to wellness education. Our team freely gives their knowledge and shares their expertise to help others. The common thread of complementary and alternative medicine practices is the belief that optimal health is mind, body and spirit working in symphony to achieve optimal health. We are planting seeds that will build healthier communities and assist in the growth of the Metro Detroit CAM market."
